Michael Mark Scanlan, 67, formerly of Indiana, PA died peacefully after a lengthy illness on Monday January 13, 2025 in the presence of his loving family.
The second of seven children, Mark was born on June 16,1957 in Scranton, Pa. to the late John J. and Mary Louise (Pugh) Scanlan. Mark's formative years were in Indiana Pa. from 1962-1974, attending Ben Franklin Elementary School and Indiana High School before moving to Leesburg, Va. to graduate in 1975.
Mark's early years included riding minibikes in the woods; attending IUP basketball camp; forming lifelong friendships with the Reilly and Dougherty families; trips to the Jersey Shore; visits with cousins in Scranton and forming his Christian faith at St. Thomas More Newman Center.
After graduation from Indiana University of PA he began a lengthy career at various operations throughout the US with ARAMARK at Olympic Games and NFL Stadiums in Pittsburgh, Baltimore and New England. Mark spent years in New York City managing the steak houses Smith & Wollensky's, Ben Benson's and the Capital Grille, as well as in Miami and Las Vegas where he was the consummate host to all. He managed operations at the Madison Square Garden Theatre and PNC Arts Center in New Jersey where he continued to provide an unmatchable experience for guests, friends and family.
Mark enjoyed spending time with lifelong friends, cousins, siblings, and his parents and spoiling his nephews and nieces who he loved immensely. His love for sports, travel and music took him to many major sporting events and concerts. He loved his many rescue dogs throughout his life, beginning with Cleo and including Chloe, Zoe, Jazz and Teddy.
Mark will be remembered for his smile, his loving presence and his desire to make everyone happy, especially for his many culinary talents and love for family hospitality in Haddonfield, NJ.
Mark is survived by his two brothers: Peter of Washington, DC and David of Mt. Laurel, NJ; two sisters Meg (Dave) Georgiana of Unionville, PA and Amy (Patrick) O'Hearn of Cherry Hill, NJ; nieces and nephews who he adored, Dylan (Rosemary Walker) O'Hearn; Jacqueline Georgiana (Dan); David (Kate) Georgiana, Michael Georgiana, Blair Scanlan, Daffy Scanlan and Sam Scanlan, and grandnieces Cassidy and Celia and grandnephew David . He is also survived by numerous cousins in the Hinton, Quinn, Harrison, Boyce, Scanlan, Burke and Pugh family.
Mark is preceded in death by two brothers, Shane and Patrick and grandparents Margaret and Jack Scanlan and Edward and Louise Pugh.
A Christian Memorial service and interment will be held on Saturday January 25 at 11:00 am at the Chapel at Cathedral Cemetery, 1708 Oram St, Scranton, PA. to be celebrated by his cousin Msgr. Joseph G. Quinn.
